How Do You Draw A Penguin Step By Step

This tutorial shows how to draw a cute cartoon penguin step by step. It includes eight steps in total with illustrated drawing examples for each.

It's recommended that you use a pencil until an draw light lines until you finish the line drawing of the penguin.

Step 1 – Draw the Outline of the Head & Body

Start by drawing the outline of the penguins head and body. Draw the top portions of the head as pretty much one big curve with smaller curves to each side for what will later be the cheeks.

Make the body somewhat similar to an oval in shape but with a flattened bottom.

Step 2 – Draw the Feet

Add the feet with three toes on each. As penguins have webbed feet draw the toes with smooth curved lines in between them.

Step 3 – Draw the Flippers

At the sides of the body just slightly below the head/cheeks add the flippers. Draw them sticking out a good distance away form the body.

Step 4 – Draw the Eyes

Draw the outer shape of each eye as a sort of upside down letter "U". Touching the inner corners of the eyes drawn another set of similar shapes for the pupils.

Inside the pupils draw a small pair of ovals for the highlights/reflection.

Step 5 – Draw the Beak

Just a tiny bit below the eyes draw the beak. Make its outer shape like a sort of flattened lemon. Inside it draw the mouth with a light curve.

Step 6 – Draw a Fluff of Feathers on the Head

To make the penguin look slightly more interesting add a small fluff of feathers to the top of it's head.

Step 7 – Finish the Line Drawing

To finish the line drawing outline the penguins feather pattern. It should start from the top of the beak and wrap around the eyes. Afterwards it can pretty much follow the curves of the cheeks and then the body.

Once done go over your drawing with a pen, marker or darker pencil lines.

Step 8 – Color the Penguin

As the penguin in this example has very bright colors it may be a good idea to color it using markers but you can also use paints or colored pencils if you prefer.

Color the outer shape of the penguins body black, make the beak and feet orange and the eyes a light blue (leave the reflections outlined earlier white).
